Figure 52 represents waves on a stretch of water where a constant wind is blowing against the current. The thin lines indicate shallow waves and the thick lines indicate steeper waves. The shallow waves in this case can be taken as an indication of a weak current and the steep waves as an indication of a stronger current.

On the other hand, the current may be constant and the wind speed variable, in which case the steeper waves would be found with the stronger wind.
